Classical meets jazz: Bolero Berlin at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt

They also call themselves The Latin Soul of the Berlin Philharmonic – and the name says it all: Consisting of soloists from the Berlin Philharmonic and top-class jazz musicians, the band Bolero Berlin sets off a firework of rhythms. On Thursday, October 10, the six-strong combo will perform at Jazz at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt starting at 8 PM.

The concert marks a new beginning for a band that has had some tough times. Bolero Berlin lost two members in quick succession: Guitarist Helmut Nieberle died in 2020, as did percussionist Topo Gioia in April of this year. The dual tragedies were a turning point for the group, whom the Jazz at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt audience will remember for their performances in 2008, 2014, and 2017. Helmut Nieberle’s friend Paulo Morello has taken up the guitar, while Uruguay-native Rolo Rodriguez is now bringing authentic Latin rhythms in place of Argentinean Topo Gioia.

Bolero Berlin have remained true to their recipe of success. The band, which features soloists form the Berlin Philharmonic alongside jazz musicians, plays a fiery blend of Cuban boleros, Argentinean tangos, Duke Ellington, Maurice Ravel, and Georges Bizet. The spirited sextet brings to the Audi museum mobile chamber music pithiness, passion, and improvisation, with an emotional depth that ranges from melancholy to sensual and an elegant style worthy of any great concert hall.

After Work Jazz Lounge in October

In the following weeks, the After Work Jazz Lounge in the Bar & Lounge at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt will feature free jazz in the evenings. On October 17, Tizian Jost and Bernhard Pichl will perform there on vibraphone and piano, respectively. The Jasmin Bayer Trio will follow on October 24, and the band Jazzango featuring Finnish singer Tuija Komi and Moldovan accordion virtuoso Vlad Cojocaru will perform on October 31. The concerts start at 6 PM.
