Rallycross world champions continue to be united: Ekström to race with Heikkinen
In the 2017 season, Mattias Ekström and his EKS rallycross team will again be on the FIA World Rallycross Championship grid with Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen as the second driver. Last year, the 25-year-old Finn together with Ekström had secured the team championship title in their 560-hp Audi S1 EKS RX quattro. “Never change a winning team,” says Ekström. “I’m happy about tackling the title defense project with Topi. He’s a young but very experienced race driver who’s a perfect fit for our team.” Heikkinen became world rallycross vice champion in 2014 and finished on podium three times last season. In the drivers’ classification, he occupied position seven. “It’s great that Mattias Ekström is placing his trust in me again this year. I’m very proud of continuing to be a part of this fantastic team,” says Heikkinen. EKS will receive factory support from AUDI AG starting in the 2017 season, which means that Audi’s motorsport department, in addition to Formula E and DTM, is now competing in the FIA World Rallycross Championship as well.
