Mattia Binotto takes over a leadership position for Audi in Formula 1

Mattia Binotto was born in Lausanne (Switzerland) in 1969 and is an Italian citizen. After studying mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, he also obtained a master’s degree in automotive engineering at the University of Modena. His career path led him to Ferrari in 1995, where he started as an engine engineer in the Scuderia Ferrari test team. Following initial roles in the racing team, he took over the position of Chief Engineer in 2007 and became Head of Engines in 2014. He was promoted to Technical Director of Ferrari in 2016. Mattia Binotto was the Team Principal at Scuderia Ferrari from 2019 to 2022 and oversaw the outfit twice finishing runner-up in the teams’ standings (2019 and 2022), as well as Charles Leclerc scoring second place in the drivers’ standings (2022) during this time.

On August 1, 2024, Mattia Binotto took over the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of Sauber Motorsport AG. Together with the future Team Principal, Jonathan Wheatley, Mattia Binotto is part of the dual leadership role in the management of Sauber Motorsport AG.
